Favor with the Boss

Yesterday afternoon, my friend, Carlene, brought food to have lunch with me in the park. We were ready to chat, laugh, pray…whatever God had planned, and guess what? He had something planned.

As we were sitting on the wall where I usually sit, my buddy, David, drove up. David is the city worker that I recently gave a bible to. He’s always so happy to see me, and the feeling is very mutual. He approached us and met Carlene. We talked about his kids a little (they are really good at sports and are costing him a lot of money). Carlene revealed that he was a thinker; he agreed. In his demeanor, he has such reverence for God. It’s so apparent. He let us eat and carried on with his work.

Carlene and I just sat there learning about each other, eating amazing food, and eventually, David came back around to get into his shed, which is behind the wall I normally lean against. As he was standing there, a truck pulled up. It was his boss. David has a certain fear of his boss that was expressed all over his face. There have been many times where David would say he wanted a hug but didn’t want his boss to see…didn’t want to get in trouble, so when his boss stepped out of the truck, I didn’t know “what” to expect. I was pleasantly surprised.

He came over and, immediately, started giving me and Carlene a hard time in a very good way. He was joking around with us…probably a side that David had never experienced. As his boss, Salvador, was joking with us, I noticed a chain around his neck and, what looked like, the top of a cross. I said, “What’s on your chain?” At first, he didn’t hear me, so Carlene asked, and sure enough, he pulled out a cross. I said, “I love Jesus, too!” He smiled and carried on with David.

It was so amazing! God showed David a side of Salvador that probably melted away every bit of fear he had about his boss. As we were leaving, we said good-byes, and I called his boss by the wrong name, which made us all laugh. I love how God keeps entering into David’s life.
