Last night, I stopped by church to drop something off for Carolyn, and I was asked to talk with a woman, who had a black eye. She was ready to leave, so I ran to meet her. It was amazing!
She spoke about a curfew and said she needed to catch the bus, so I offered to walk up the street with her. In getting to know homeless people, I’ve learned they’re very self-sufficient, not wanting much help, so I didn’t even offer to carry anything…just walked with her.
She’s staying at a rescue mission place. I didn’t ask about her life, just how she ended up there. She said she was tired of living on the streets. I invited her back to church and told her it was because I really wanted to get to know her and wanted to tell her all about me. She said she would, and then, I prayed over her.
Have you ever watched a cartoon where a snowman melted? That’s the best description of what happened. After a few words, she encountered God in a new way and began to cry. You could see walls melting away: she stepped closer, grabbed hold of me, and when we hugged, she kept holding me tighter and tighter. She just melted.
She’ll be back, and I can’t wait to get to know her.
